A key component of worship and praise has always been music. The tradition of Western music at St Stephen is not only a reflection of the historical beauty of the ancient, and it's continued purpose in reverent worship, but also the rediscovery of this gift at a time when so much of what was the nature of Western worship has been forgotten or discarded in order to find some contemporary substitute.
St Stephen is blessed to have a music director, who is not just a talented musician but also an educator within the Massachusetts university system. Mathonwy Bostock PhD, has brought his skills and knowledge of music to our parish incorporating education, musicians from the outside community, our own choir and his knowledge of languages and his study of the ancient Propers, tones and chants of the Church to provide s perfect music ministry for our Western Rite community.
Our services include Matins, Vespers and Liturgies, which are all sung in the tones and settings of the Gregorian, Ambrosian and Sarum tones. Traditional plainchant and polyphony selections including instrumental accompaniment by organ, cello, harp, woodwinds and percussion are also part of the musical offering.
